THE COLON

The colon the last part of the digestive system. The colon is approximately six feet long and moves waste from the small intestine to the rectum.

After you take a bite of that juicy hamburger, it travels down the esophagus to the stomach. The food is broken down and stored, after which it is slowly released into the small intestine. The function of the small intestine is to absorbs nutrients. After it takes what it wants, and the rest of the food is pushed on through to the colon, also known as the large intestine, for further processing.

The colon’s job is to absorb salt, water, and harmful materials form the now sludgy substance before passing it on through to the rectum.

You can tell how waste sits in your colon by how often you have a bowel movement. The often you go, the faster your colon processes the sludgy waste. By the time the sludge arrives in the colon, 90% of the water has been absorbed by the body. Most of the remaining liquid is removed by the colon before it arrives at the rectum.

As the sludge moves through the colon, mucus and bacteria are thrown into the mix, turning it into feces, which moves through the rectum and out through the anus.

What You Should Know About The Colon

For those of you who are not aware what the colon is and its functions, reading this is a good thing to do. The colon is considered to be the last portion wherein colonthe last phase of digestion occurs, hence, keeping it healthy is a vital thing for survival. This is where wastes are being extracted from the food that we ingest and are eliminated from the body. Without the colon, the human body will be ridden with toxins which can be fatal in the long run.

Keeping the colon clean is vital. To be able to do this, you should always eat the right food because eating them promotes a healthy digestive system. If you are not eating the right food and not drinking the recommended amount of water that is needed daily, you can be subjected to different diseases of the colon that can be deadly if not treated early. Blockage in the colon is also a thing to be avoided because if not, then it will lead to surgery.

A lot of medical practitioners say that health begins in the colon and they are right about that. Without a healthy colon, you will be prone to the following diseases, to name a few:

  1. Colon cancer
  2. Diverticular disease of the colon
  3. Angiodysplasia of the colon
  4. Constipation
  5. Colon Polyps
  6. Gastritis
  7. Ulcers in the colon
  8. Heartburn
  9. Lactose Intolerance
  10. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  11. Hemorrhoids
  12. Indigestion
  13. Diarrhea
  14. Digestive track bleeding
  15. Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome
  16. Colon Polyps
  17. Gallstones
  18. Hernia
  19. Thickening of the colon
  20. Narrowing of the colon

A lot of studies have been made about the colon and the different colon diseases and it was found out that most of those who are suffering from them have a low fiber diet, making it hard to eliminate the wastes from the body. Based on studies, colon cancer is the second cancer killer in America, just next to lung cancer. Therefore, it is very important to eat foods that are high in fiber to enable waste elimination to go smoothly and also, drinking approximately two (2) liters of water in a day will really help in breaking down the food you ingest daily in a proper manner.

Keeping your colon healthy should be one of your health priorities. Not having a healthy one can lead to fatal consequences.
