All About Colon Tumors
People feel some sort of fear and trepidation whenever they hear the words “colon tumor.” No one can blame anybody for feeling this way since colon tumors are related to the dreaded cancer disease that have been the culprit in a lot of deaths anywhere in the world.
Tumors can grow anywhere in the human body. They are abnormal growths of cells. Tumors, when found on the colon, can lead to colon cancer. According to the World Health Organization, with approximately 655,000 deaths worldwide per year, “it is the 3rd most common form of cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Western world.” Colon cancer tumors are the cause of it, and they can grow in the rectum, the colon, and the appendix to be classified as colon, or colorectal, cancer.
Colon cancer tumors are believed to arise from polyps in the colon which, at first, are benign growths but, over time, develop and mutate into cancer cells. Colon polyps are mushroom-like growths. The growth of these benign colon tumors are usually detected through colonoscopy, which is defined as an endoscopic examination of the colon using a fiber optic camera on a flexible tube which passes through the anus. Colonoscopy is usually recommended by doctors to patients who are experiencing colon disorders.
Colon cancer tumor size is a contributory factor on how the cancer is spread and is treated at the same time. Usually, them smaller the colon cancer tumor size, the more curable the colon cancer is.
Other tests used to detect tumor in the colon aside from colonoscopy are fecal blood tests, sigmoidoscopy, virtual colonoscopy, barium enema, and a digital rectal exam. These tests have their own advantages and disadvantages and determining which would work best to your advantage if in case you need to undergo some sort of testing for colon cancer or colon disorders is all up to your physician. Usually, your physician will first check your general health, your age, your medical history, your family history, and the potential of the test to induce harm. Colon cancer can be prevented if the colon tumor or the colon tumors are detected at their early stage.
To be able to avoid being diagnosed with colon tumors which can lead to colon cancer, you should start doing good health practices right now. Start with little things, like eating healthy foods that are rich in nutrients and fiber. Get rid of vices like smoking and drinking. Start engaging in doing exercises that will not leave you sedentary. You should always remember that when it comes to dealing with diseases that can be deadly, prevention is lways better than cure.
