Have you ever heard this pick-up line: “Do you like water? Because that’s 70% of my body”? It is funny, but it does remind you of how your body absorbs water from the food you eat. From all the chewing in the mouth, down to the churning in the stomach, then further down the intestines where the now liquid-like food is broken down for easier nutrient and mineral absorption. The leftover waste then goes to the large intestine, and further down the colon for the last-stage absorption of water and fat-soluble minerals in the waste before it finally goes down with a flush!
And because the colon gives the body a final chance to absorb the water and mineral into the blood stream, it is safe to say that it does the “dirty” part. As the water leaves the waste product, what is left ends up getting harder and harder, until it becomes more solid.
Due to this, the colon is prone to several disorders. But colon problem symptoms are easy to spot, mainly because the discomfort and pain they cause are easily felt. If you are experiencing the symptoms listed below, seek the help of your physician.
1. Perforated Colon. This occurs when a hole is found in the walls of the colon. Perforated colon symptoms include abdominal pain, bleeding, extreme nausea, fever, chills, cramps, loss of appetite and vomiting.
2. Impacted Colon. The compressed fecal matter accumulated in the colon walls over a period of time causes this. Impacted colon symptoms include difficulty in moving bowels and narrow stool width. Due to the toxins not being able to be expelled from the body, bad breath also becomes an issue. Halitosis and occasional stomach pains are also symptoms of an impacted colon.
3. Ruptured Colon. This refers to the tearing of the intestinal wall by hardened feces or other bowel obstructions. Extreme pressure in the lower abdominal area, acute pains and extreme constipation are common ruptured colon symptoms .
4. Colon Tumor. Colon tumors are small growths, known as polyps, that start to divide more rapidly than the usual rate. These tumors then begin to cause the rupture of the organ by causing swelling and pressure. This pressure may also lead to fecal impaction. The abnormal growth of the tumors may cause the colon to be detached from the supporting tissues. When these tumors turn to be malignant or cancerous, they lead to colon cancer. Colon tumor symptoms include a change in bowel habit, reduction in stool diameter, and the passage of blight red blood in the stool.
If your body needs water, then you need your colon. Make sure you take good care of it.
