Colon Disorders: Symptoms And Preventive Measures
A tube-shaped organ that is muscular and measures about 4 feet long. This is the most common description of how the human colon looks like. It serves three main functions in the human body, namely: (1) digestion and absorption of the nutrients derived from the food we ingest; (2) concentration of feces through absorption of electrolytes and other liquids from them; (3) storage of fecal material and controlling their elimination from the body.
Instances wherein these three (3) main functions of the colon are being disrupted are what leads to colon disorders. Disorders of the colon can be fatal if not treated early. This is because the colon is the major eliminator of toxic wastes from the body and if these wastes are not eliminated, they will poison its entire system, causing failures in various organs.
The most common symptoms of colon disorder are:
- rectal bleeding or bloody stools
- change in bowel movement habits
- change in the frequency of bowel movement
- change in the consistency and the quality of stools
- stools covered with mucus
- black, tarry stools
- feeling like you have not eliminated all that you need to excrete
- obstruction of stools
If you are experiencing the colonic disorders symptoms mentioned above, chances are, you are suffering from some type of colonic disorder. The most common causes why these colon disorders symptoms are being manifested by a person and, eventually, why they are diagnosed as having them are the following:
- There is a higher risk for people who are older (between the ages 60 and 70; sometimes earlier).
- People who have a family history of colon disorders are more prone to having them.
- People who indulge in vices are more likely to have colon bowel disorders than people who do not.
- Those who have a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to develop colonic motility disorders than people who live an active lifestyle and exercise regularly.
Among the most common colon disorders are the following:
- Colorectal or colon cancer
- Colonic polyps
- Ulcerative colitis
- Diverticulitis
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
These colonic disorders usually coincide with diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps, indigestion, bloating, flatulence, acne, hair loss, anemia, lethargy, and even depression. What usually cause their manifestation are really just simple things like eating the wrong kind of food and indulging in vices that are generally harmful to the body itself. But sad to say, some people take action against their proliferation a bit too late at times, causing dire effects.
Today, a lot of people are becoming well aware of colon disorders and what to do in order to prevent them. Living a healthy lifestyle is still the best preventive measure of all.
