10 WAYS TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY COLON

If colon problems run in your family or you are merely trying to find more ways to live a healthier lifestyle. Then the following tips may be of benefit to you, by helping you get or stay in good shape and feel great.

1. Consume a diet rich in fiber. You can’t hear this often enough but a diet rich in fiber is key to naturally assisting the digestion process. So make sure you incorporate everyday fiber rich foods which include fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, peas and lentils.

2. Boost your vitamin D intake. Eating foods rich in Vitamin D like milk, fortified eggs, salmon and mackerel will assist your body’s absorption of calcium and help prevent colon cancer.

3. Drink plenty of water. You should drink at minimum six to ten glasses of water a day, more if you exercise or sweat a lot (as in summer time). Most people do not drink enough water but its generally just a conscious adjustment and with proper hydration the whole body works more efficiently.

5. Ensure you getting sufficient amounts of Folic acid a B vitamin. This substance can also help decrease your risk of colorectal cancer. Foods rich in folic acid include, fortified breakfast cereals, whole grains, dried beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables, liver and egg yolks.

6.Eat lean meat When you want to make sure that you are eating right when it comes to taking care of your colon, make sure that you eat lean meats, like poultry and fish. Eggs can also help you satisfy a protein craving; just remember to curb your urge for red or fatty meat.

7. Get an annual physical. Remember a stitch in time saves nine. That just means prevention or early detection is key when trying to prevent cancer. With regular visits to the doctor you become more aware of you body and how it functions. That way if you notice symptoms like unexplained weight loss or bloody stools you will be prompted to get immediate medical attention. As we age particularly over 50 colon cancer screening is a must. If your doctor orders a colonoscopy it will give him or her a more accurate depiction of your colon.

8. Get a exercise plan that appeals to you and stick with it. When you exercise your are helping your internal as well as external you stay healthier and able to fight off all sorts of illness and diseases. Without routine exercise its almost impossible to stay in tip top shape.
